Holding Up the Home Alone: Finding Strength When Your Husband Chooses Not to Provide
There is this unique kind of exhaustion that comes when you carry the load you never imagined would fall on your shoulders.
Taking on family responsibilities alone is a heavy burden, and coping when your husband doesn’t provide can feel overwhelming.
Many women in Nigeria and beyond know what it means to become both the provider and nurturer, the rock for your children, and often the silent sufferer in a world that seems to expect you to handle it all with a smile.
This is not because of circumstances beyond his control, but rather his choice to neglect his role in providing for the family
When your husband is not contributing financially or emotionally, it is easy to feel weighed down, overwhelmed, and even resentful.
It is not just the money that is missing. It is the support, the sense of partnership, the feeling that someone’s got your back.
Dearest sister, here is the truth:
Your value is not diminished because you are shouldering burdens you were never meant to bear alone.
Our society might judge, misunderstand, or even make you feel as though you are somehow “less than” because you are the one picking up the pieces, paying the bills, and keeping the family going.
But what they don’t see is the strength, the resilience, the absolute grace it you takes to keep moving forward each day.
You are seen.
Your pain, your sacrifices, your endless resilience do not go unnoticed and would be rewarded.
How and when? I do not know.
To the woman feeling overwhelmed by the bills, the parenting, and the unspoken burdens, here are some truths and my reminders to you, today:
1. It is okay to acknowledge the weight you are carrying
Don’t dismiss or downplay your feelings. It is perfectly valid to feel hurt, tired, or even angry.
Trying to “stay strong” by suppressing your pain only adds to your emotional burden.
Allow yourself the space to feel, to cry, and to breathe deeply.
2. You are not alone
So many Nigerian women are walking this same path, even if they don’t talk about it openly.
In a society where we often feel pressured to keep up appearances, remember that others are facing similar struggles.
You don’t have to suffer in silence. There is community in shared experiences.
3. Seek help, not just from people but from your Creator
When the people around you don’t understand, God does.
Don’t shy away from pouring your heart out to Him. Your faith can be a profound source of strength.
Lean into it; pray even when the words fail.
Ask for guidance, strength, and provision. You are not expected to do this alone, and He is there to make the load lighter.
4. Set Boundaries to Protect Your Emotional Well-being
Sometimes, you have to create boundaries even with your husband.
Protecting your mental health is paramount, especially when you are under such immense stress.
Say “no” to guilt, say “no” to overextending yourself.
Focus on what is best for your health and
what creates the best environment for your children.
You deserve space to be strong, steady, and peaceful.
5. Prioritize Yourself and Your Children’s Well-being
Your strength is your greatest asset.
Take moments to care for yourself, however small.
Your children need a healthy, emotionally stable mother.
Don’t let guilt keep you from tending to your own needs.
6. Seek ways to earn more without overexerting yourself.
Explore New Income Streams Within Your Skills and Passions
Yes, find new streams of income from what you already know or do. Consider ways to create additional income by leveraging what you already know or enjoy doing.
Earning more can ease some of the burdens you carry, allowing you to provide more stability for you and your children without feeling overexerted.
Whether it is offering a skill as a service, starting a small side business, or sharing your knowledge online, a little extra income can make a big difference.
7. Connect with a Support System
Talk to trusted friends, join support groups, and connect with communities like ours Thrive Above Marital Crisis Community.
Sometimes, just knowing others are standing with you, listening, and supporting you makes all the difference.
8. Avoid Enabling His Irresponsible Behaviour
It is natural to want to keep peace, but shielding a spouse from the consequences of his choices only drains your energy and prolongs the cycle.
Instead, focus on what is within your control.
Refuse to cover for his lack of support, financially or emotionally.
9. Hold on to Hope, and Stay Firm in Your Dreams
This season is not forever.
Though the journey feels long and the weight heavy, it is important to have hope.
Visualize a future where peace and joy replace the burdens you are carrying today.
Let that vision give you the strength to take each step, one day at a time.
