BEING A SINGLE MOTHER IS HARD, BUT BEING MARRIED AND LIVING SINGLE IS HARDER
Yesterday, I watched Straw by Tyler Perry.
It just came out recently on Netflix.
I cried like I hadn’t cried in years.
I saw a woman living the reality many of us know too well, just with less financial advantage.
I saw a woman who gave her all and still got nothing in return.
A woman who stayed strong for her child even while she was falling apart.
A woman who had no one to lean on yet showed up every day like a warrior.
Taraji P. Henson’s performance was beyond phenomenal.
But of course, that’s Cookie Lyon.
She owned that role completely.
Honestly, I don’t think anyone can add anything more to that character for a long time.
But what really got to me was that
Even with all her struggles as a single mother in that movie, her situation still looked better than what some married women are going through today.
Married… but carrying the whole financial burden alone.
Married… but begging a neighbour to take her to the hospital when labour starts, while her husband is somewhere eating and relaxing.
Married… but left to pay the hospital bills after delivery because her husband is nowhere near the hospital.
Married… but taking a sick child to the hospital alone, while the man in the house lies in bed without concern.
Married… but the children have been out of school for weeks because school fees haven’t been paid, and he is totally unbothered.
Married… but groaning in pain and not even getting a word of care or basic medication.
Married… but can’t afford treatment for herself, because everything she earns goes into food and survival.
Married… but completely alone.
Married… but doing life like a widow whose husband is still alive.
Married… but bearing the full weight of two people, without support, help, or care.
Married… but denied s£x for weeks, months, or even years.
Being a single mother is hard.
But being married and living like you are single, that one cuts deeper.
To every mother bearing the burden alone, I see you.
May help come to you, and come early.
May you never be crushed under a load you were never meant to carry alone.
May support find you before you reach your breaking point.
May your children thrive.
May you enjoy the fruits of your labour while you are still alive, strong, and well.
